Travel Guide: Charleston, SC

It has been years since Raymond & I visited Charleston, SC. We had the opportunity to return for my birthday trip and really enjoyed walking around the historical city.

My favorite part is the history of the area and the architecture which has been so beautifully preserved. We made the reference that Charleston was similar to Manhattan both in shape of the peninsula and surrounding areas and in how it was settled and developed.

The one thing that Charleston has over Manhattan is that it’s history is still very much preserved. You are lucky to find historical homes in Manhattan these days!

We wanted to compile a travel guide for you in the event you are planning a trip to the Holy City soon!

WHERE TO STAY

Air BNBs and VRBOs are a great way to experience the neighborhood aspect of Charleston, but if you are more interested in the hotel vibe, here is a list for you!

WHERE TO EAT

I’ll be the first to admit that we did not eat out much while in Charleston. We had Cody with us which equates to patio eating. Well patio eating in January is a little tricky. ;) We stopped at the local Harris Teeter almost nightly and picked up dinner, breakfast, and snacks. This worked out great for us!

There are SO.MANY places to eat in Charleston and I am sure the list of restaurants is forever changing!

WHERE TO SHOP

King Street has the best shopping in downtown Charleston. There are so many stores and options; it’s like one big mall stretching for miles!

We are more into the thrifty shopping so I recommend Palmetto Goodwill and the local Habitat ReStores. There’s not a lot of thrift stores in the area aside from Goodwill and ReStore so go to many and be sure to take your time!

WHAT TO DO

Watch the sunset over the battery. Grab a plate of takeout or pack a picnic and head to the Battery Park. The sunset over the river is exquisite!

You could also watch the sunset on a rooftop bar.

Tour the many historical homes and museums. Including colonial churches (our favorite!).

and so many more!

Besides eating, shopping (or thrifting), and walking around, you could fill a week with ease.

Who’s ready to plan a trip?!
